The name of the Ganges is known all throughout the land of India and Bangladesh. This river that runs for 1,560 miles from the Himalayas all the way to the Bay of Bengal is more than just flowing water. This river is life, purity, and a goddess to the people. The river is Ganga Ma, "Mother Ganges." Her name and her story is known all throughout the land. The story of the Ganges, from her source to the sea, from old times to new, is the story of civilization and culture, of the rise and fall of empires, of great and proud cities, of adventures of man.
The Ganges originates in the Himalayas with the source stream originating at an elevation of 7,756 m (25,446 ft). The streams are fed by melting snow and ice from glaciers along the way. The river progresses through Northern India and then Bangladesh on it’s passage to the sea. After entering Bangladesh, it meets up with other famous rivers. Fanning out into the 350 km (220 miles) wide Ganges Delta, it empties out into the Bay of Bengal. Only two rivers, the Amazon and Congo have a higher discharge than the combined flow of the Ganges.
Café Ganges takes it’s name from the river and offers a diversity of cuisine from India and Bangladesh. We offer food dishes from Northern India as well as traditional dishes from Bangladesh. |
